The Handbook of Functional Isometrics

Originally intended as a pictorial guide for Steve's online clients, The Handbook is too good to keep secret within the vaults at MaxwellSC.

In the simplest language, Steve Maxwell distills high-concept, high-inensity training, specifically the Timed Static Contraction (TSC) system of Overcoming Isometrics.

Using an ordinary (and easily obtained) leverage strap for moving furniture, Steve has put together the key movements to create endless workout sequences and achieve self-reliance in strength training. Even better, if you don't care to create your own workout, Steve offers seven solid programs from general to specialization.

Photographed in an actual hotel room, because Steve wanted to illustrate real-life hacks for solo training on the road. Further, if you don't have access to the suggested strap, you can use any strap at hand, like a jiu jitsu belt, bathrobe belt, or length of nylon cord.

  • If you travel
  • If you prefer training solo
  • If you work out at home
  • If you are fascinated with minimalist concepts
  • If you are pressed for time for training, due to schedule, circumstance, or nerve-fatigue
  • If you are injured or otherwise physically limited
  • If you are seeking a more philosphical attitude in training
  • If you have ever wished for the opportunity to "pick Steve's brain"

Come on in and meet Steve's brainchild, The Handbook of Functional Isometrics.

Pure Steve, in tone and content, The Handbook is a sensible, down-to-earth tutorial in human adaptability, and honest love of physical culture.

Ever the straightforward guy (with a half-century of practical knowledge) Steve squats, sits on the floor, crouches, digs in, personally demonstrates each move, and describes--in plain language--every instruction, as if coaching a personal client -- and that client is you, the reader.

In Steve's Own Words

I've come full-circle in my training philosphy. My goal has always been strength-training to become better at the things I like to do-- it was never to become better at exercise per se, or to be better at lifting weights.

While I did carry on transient love affairs with those things, I've realized they are ultimately unsustainable and, due to normal aging phases, could eventually lead to a loss of motivation and will to train, and so my goal changed:

To work my muscles in a meaningful way that will retard the aging process, enabling me to pursue the sports and activities that I really love--namely, jiu jitsu.

I believe that isometric training is a superior protocol towards these ends.

Because I am a full-time nomad--always on the road--I need a productive system that I can do anywhere, anytime, any place, and I've realized that many people have similar needs: like myself, they need a full-proof system that will never let them down and will provide great results in a time-efficient, but safe, manner.

And, while on that subject, for the over-50 trainee (well, for any trainee, but particularly for those over 50) safety should be one of your most important concerns.

The Handbook of Functional Isometrics is 59 (or so) pages of concise instruction, insight, and clear photos.
